Morgan Furtado Ms. Lehmann English 2-2A 4 December 2019 The Things We Need for Friendships Elizabeth Berg once said, “We are readers probably more than anything else.” Since time is a limited resource, we should carefully choose the articles we give that time to. Dorothy Rowe’s article about friendship, titled “With Friends Like These,” is certainly worth your time if you want to learn more about friendships with other people. The author’s background contributes to the quality of this article. Rowe has the qualifications to write this article because she has a degree in psychology and has experience working as a psychologist. The purpose of this article is to teach readers about friendship, our emotions, and our perspectives about others. The article is written to give readers basic information. Rowe uses an informal writing style. She uses a lot of 1st person pronouns. For example,“I, we, us, etc.” This article is written for a general audience. There really aren’t any outside sources given. Has suitable basic knowledge. Rowe’s format helps readers understand the article better. Rowe puts section titles in the article to give the readers an understanding of what they are going to read next. I felt like the section titles helped me because I knew what I each section was going to be about. She clearly introduces the main claim in the introduction of the article to tie readers in. She also hooks readers by finding common ground. Rowe used good organization by writing everything smoothly, especially with the help of section titles. Rowe’s content gives the readers a better look at happens in friendships. The main claim is introduced early and referred backto in the conclusion at the end. Rowe’s whole main claim for this article is that our friends are based off our perspectives of ourselves and others and what we think they aresupposed to do. Rowe argues that our friendships are necessary for us to be happy, but friendships can be difficult because of our perceptions of ourselves and one another. She really doesn’t have any outside sources for the article. Rowe uses a story from one of her friends. In conclusion, Rowe has the qualifications to write this article. The whole article was organized very well. The little things that Rowe did made the artice a lot better. Overall, I think this is a great article to get more information about friendships, what we think of them, and what it takes to be in one.
Article Review Reflection 1. Explain the process you went to write this paper. Please be specific. - First, I had to make a outline of my review. Second, I put my outline into a rough draft. Then, Ms. Lehmann graded our outlines and handed them back to us. Last, I made the corrections from the revised paper. 2. What qualifies this paper as an informative essay? What are the requirements for a review and how did you meet them? - I wrote about the author's background, format, and content. You would need the qualifications and purpose of why Rowe wrote the article. 3. What one piece of advice would you give someone writing a review for the first time? Why? - I would say know what you are writing about and have a connection with the topic. Also know a lot about the author.
