Morgan Furtado Ms. Lehman English 1- A 19 September 2018 Summary of Once Upon a Time “Once Upon a Time’’ is a short story by Nadine Gordimer that warns about the dangers of shutting people out. The narrator hears sounds in the middle of the night. Then tells a story to calm herself down. Gordimer’s story is about a mom, dad, and a boy who live in an upper-class suburb during apartheid. Later on, the suburb experiences a spike in crime rates. Because this worries the parents, they install electric fences, put bars on the windows, and install a very high wall around their home. They even put barbed wire on the top of the wall. In the end, the boy grabs a ladder and climbs to the top of the wall, tying to climb through the wire. His body is mangled.
Morgan Furtado Ms. Lehman English 1-3 21 September 2018 Summary of “Rituals of Memory” In her essay “Rituals of Memory,” Kimberly M. Blaser argues that our relationships to family and community shape who we are. Blaser gives readers a metaphor comparing those relationships to her friend’s curly, tanagled hair. Next, she describes her memories of the legionnaires honoring fallen solder’s and Indian warriors. She also gives readers the example of her own two cultures and how they made her who she is. Catholic school taught her to love god and always do what you need too in your life. Through out school days she was picking up hazelnuts, when partridge hunting fished, had long deer-hunting weekends, went to powwows, went spearing beaded on looms, and made fish house candles using sausage and quilts. Her life in school and Catholic church was recorded and documented- dates of baptism, First Communion and confirmation. But when Blaser was with the Indians she really never knew what was going to happen, cause it was unknown really.
